Kami-Robo are robot fighters made from paper, which were created by Tomohiro Yasui over the course of 23 years of play within the boundaries of his home and office. During this time, over 200 wrestlers were born. The fabulous history of Kami-Robo professional wrestling revolves around the ring and those who survive the battles within. It’s a test of technique and character. Wrestlers come and go, friendships are forged and broken, trust is won and betrayed. Since Yasui’s fighters went public, they have caught the attention of media inside and outside of Japan, such as Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun, Weekly ASCII and Quanto. In March, an exhibition kicks off at PARCO, in Shibuya, Tokyo, and is scheduled to tour major Japanese cities thereafter. A Kami-Robo event is also scheduled to take place later in the year at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo. Kami-Robo wrestling figures will be released by Bandai Co.’s boys’ toy division, which coincides with the release of a Kami-Robo DVD and book. Also, Kami-Robo CG images are now being created, in preparation for broadcasting abroad. Made of paper, a simple but enduring material, Kami-Robo wrestlers are highly unique and impressive. As the product of one man’s vision and passion, Kami-Robo exude something unusual. And though they were created for private entertainment, Yasui’s fantasy world of wrestlers has something for everyone.
